Gearing up for 2015 Santa Fe Weddings!

With three babies at home, it's can be a challenge keeping up with all the latest flower and cake fads... but what it comes down to is being able to provide what the client wants. With a good quality picture or permission for artistic freedom in the design, it's so fun to come up with different ideas and designs. Over the past many years, it has been awesome to be a part of so many special events in people's lives. I've been able to celebrate with those who are celebrating weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, etc, and also mourn with those who are mourning the passing away of a loved one (funeral arrangements). While I honestly prefer providing floral arrangements for the above mentioned events, specialty cakes also provide a pretty awesome outlet for creativity. Often times, it's the personal challenge to see what I can accomplish and then to see the looks on the recipient is priceless. Every specialty cake is unique and made with love. I am not the most affordable "florist" or specialty cake maker, and I KNOW that there are many others who's talents FAR exceed mine, but I'm blessed and privileged to offer what I can do and help provide for my family.

Valentines Day in Santa Fe

If you think purchasing flowers from your local grocery store is better than going through a florist (i.e. ME )…think again! I recently conducted an experiment to compare the quality and longevity of my products vs. the local grocery stores’ floral products. The results truly boil down to getting what you pay for. My roses were more fragrant, larger, had nicer color, and an overall healthier appearance (less insect damage & less handling damage). Most importantly, my roses lasted nearly a week longer than those purchased from the grocery store. Plus, supporting local small business is ALWAYS a plus. Something to think about! I will be accepting a limited amount of orders for Valentine’s Day floral arrangements until Sunday February 10. Due to my babies, I will only be able to provide my services to the Santa Fe area. Orders can be placed by email, phone, or text. devonna@thornandthistle.com 505-917-7397

Baby Bump Cake

This was such a fun cake to make! The expectant mother asked me to make her a baby shower cake of my choice. She is always wearing the prettiest dresses, so I figured a baby bump cake would be absolutely perfect for her! She is having a baby boy in February so I chose a baby blue and yellow for her dress.

The dress is made out of fondant and is completed with a fondant bow. The bump is made of a round cake which has a filling of choice. This cake will feed between 12-15 people. If more is needed, the size can be adjusted or additional cake can be ordered.

I LOVE IT! :) So did everyone else :)

Thanksgiving Tiramisu

The first thing I think about when it comes to Thanksgiving is family. The close second is FOOD! Thanksgiving is a time to get together with those closest to you and enjoy their company as well as favorite recipes! This year my sister is going to be making an authentic Tiramisu. This is one of my most favorite dishes of all time! Both of us have had the privilege of tasting this delectable dessert from Italy so we both know exactly what to expect from a well-made Tiramisu. The first few attempts at this dessert were good, but not perfect, however, it is safe to say she has officially perfected the recipe. I am beyond excited for this year's Thanksgiving meal!

Thorn & Thistle Floral and Cake Designs is taking orders for this incredible dessert. You may place orders at 505-917-7397 or www.santafecakesandflowers.com or www.thornandthistle.com

Zebra Cake

I absolutely LOVE how this cake came out. This is an 8″ round chocolate cake with raspberry filling. It is covered with fondant and has black fondant zebra stripes. It is topped with a stargazer lilly and alstromeria fresh flower cake topper. I hope Nakita enjoys her birthday cake!!

1st Birthday Cake for Kaylen

This was such a fun cake to make! I loved the bright colors, polka dots, butterflies, and ladybugs! It was for my friend's little girl's first birthday party. It was a 10" marble cake with whipped cream filling and icing and then covered with my homemade marshmallow fondant. It was VERY YUMMY!

I still have some perfecting of my fondant recipe though, unfortunately, by the time the cake arrived to it's destination after an hour drive from Santa Fe, the sides began to weep. At the bakery I used to work at, we had a rule, NEVER use whipped cream with fondant, however, I am determined that it can work as I have done it several times in the past without any issues. I prefer the look of fondant as it has a very clean appearance. Kaylen LOVED her cake and I was so very honored to have been chosen to make it for her!

Here are the pictures of the cake before it's journey to Albuquerque!!
